My response to 'Tight Jeans' (2008)

Tight Jeans (2008) is written and directed by Destiny Ekaragha and stars Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Tyreke Junior Emancy and Alan George James. The film follows three young black men who are waiting to meet a friend and see a white man wearing tight jeans, which starts a conversation about why they can't wear tight jeans.

Overall, I think Tight Jeans is a decent short film and a very good directorial debut, but it doesn't particularly stand out against other short films (including our set short films). It has a nice concept and a simple execution, which I like. It also is nice to see an all-black cast with a black director for a short film. I found the film to be quite funny and entertaining, and it was also fairly thought-provoking in ways. I think that the low-budget is evident, as the visuals don't look as 'cinematic' as some of the other set films. Also, the dialogue doesn't always flow naturally which I think is partly due to the script and partly the acting (although I would say that, for the most part, the actors do a good job). I definitely admire the way that Ekaragha uses her budget limitations by setting the film in only one location and writing a script which requires minimal resources.

For my short film, I will try to utilise my resources in a similar way to Tight Jeans by keeping locations simple and having a fairly straight forward concept and execution.

  1. Good ideas. I like the dialogue in this film and the way it captures a sense of 'voice'. How will you create the 'voice' of your characters?
