Baby Driver

Baby Driver (2017) is directed by Edgar Wright and follows Baby, a criminal getaway driver with a hearing impairment who falls in love with a waitress and seeks to escape with her from his life of crime. My class studied the film's opening scene, the heist planning scene and the restaurant scene. We discussed the film's use of narrative devices and the way it develops characters.

The film's opening scene is similar in many ways to the music video for Blue Song by Mint Royale, directed by Edgar Wright several years before. The scene throws the audience straight into the action of the film without developing any of the characters explicitly, although we learn Baby's key attributes in the scene: he is jokey, he loves music and he is a brilliant getaway driver. In terms of cinematography, the scene is very bright and colourful and has lots of camera movement (although slightly less than Blue Song).

In the restaurant scene, we see that (as his name suggests), Bats is crazy and has less morality than Baby. We also see how much Baby cares about Debora.
